What plants would work in my yard?

Ok, so when my dad was still living with us, he always knew what to do in the yard and what plants went where. When he left, I picked up a job and I didn%26#039;t have time to pay attention to the gardens and yard while keeping up with high school, work, and college classes. I live on 20.11 acres, and most of that is Pine trees.

I have about 6 square gardens around pine trees. Borders made with logs. I want four flowers to plant in each of these that need little care and last longest through out the year. I also have Elephant ears and mother-in-laws around an oak tree in the same area. I have three large Diamond-ish gardens that have Azalea%26#039;s in them. They might be magnolias instead of Azalea%26#039;s.

But anyways, thats the area I%26#039;m working with. There%26#039;s a gazebo out there as well. It%26#039;s surrounded part by a picket fence and part just a regular fence, both of which are white.

If anyone has any idea%26#039;s on what flowers to plant, and what mulch, I would greatly appreciate it!

Thanks much!

MJ

Go to a plant nursery or some place like Home Depot where you will find books to buy and review. There are pages on those books that have complete layouts with regard to height and color that would look nice. You might want a landscape professional to do it for you since you have a lot of land and it would take ages to get things done. You might like to choose some plants that come up every year and others that you plant yearly so you can change the color if you like. You might also want to order a catalog from burpee.com and see what flowers you like and which grow well in your area. If you have a conservatory around you might want to visit there and see maybe which plants attract butterflies, praying mantis, or bees if that%26#039;s your thing.
Reply:Mary Jo,

I would use a variety of hosta%26#039;s under the Pine trees. They are very easy to grow and do well in the shade. If you have sunny areas I would use sedum which is hardy and very easy also. Ice plants are also awesome but love the sun and very easy to work with. My ice plants bloom from spring to late fall.

Good luck!!

Reply:I use a lot of hostas in my flower gardens. They have a pretty bloom and can be divided after a couple of years. They grow will in sun or shade. I have also found that the mulch that will last the longest is cypress. Hope this helps.

Do these go good together?

ok how would i incorperate two colors into my wedding. like my colors are azalea(which is a pink color) and yellow. this is my bridesmaids dresses

http://davidsbridal.com/bridesmaids_byco...

my mom suggested to have my flower girls and ring bearer to be in yellow dresses with azalea bow and the ring bearer in a yellow tux? would that look good?

Do these go good together?
I am using pink and yellow for my wedding, too! Watermelon and canary, specifically. :)

I think having all that pink and yellow on both children may be a bit overwhelming. Perhaps the flower girl in yellow and the ring bearer in a classic black tux with a yellow bowtie. Then she could carry pink flowers with a pink ribbon on the basket, and he could have a pink pin of flowers on his tux to bring out that accent.

Good luck! I%26#039;m sure they%26#039;ll be precious, either way! :)

Edit: I just realized, my bridesmaids even have the same dress style as yours! :)
Reply:Nice dress and pretty color. Have the ring bearer in whatever color tux the men are wearing (with your colors, a medium grey would be nice). Flower girl dress in white, with a sash in pink, then pink, yellow and white flowers.

Same with flowers for the bridesmaids, and you, too. The yellow just pretties everything up, and is a great choice to complement the pink.

http://www.kremp.com/index.cfm/fuseactio...
Reply:I do not like the idea with the yellow tux either. He could wear the black tux with the yellow vest/tie. For the flower girl you could do the pink dress with yellow sash or do what the above person posted and let the bridesmaid have yellow flowers. and the flower girl could throw the yello petals you could do subtel things to put yellow things
Reply:Hmm, pink and yellow is a lot of color, even if it%26#039;s a spring or summer wedding. I%26#039;m not particularly fond of having yellow flower girl dresses, as it would really be a LOt going down that aisle.

I think the best way to incorporate the yellow is with small accents. What about yellow flowers? Yellow tulips would be beautiful with that bridesmaids dress. You could also have the groomsmen wear yellow ties (yellow and black go really, REALLY well together - it would be unique and understated at the same time). You could even dye the bridesmaids shoes yellow. A little pop of color at the feet is always a good thing.

But having a yellow flower girl standing next to a pink bridesmaid would be a little too bold and unflattering all together. I would have the flower girls in a very neutral color like cream or ivory. You could maybe put a pink sash around their waists if you want to bring the pink in more.

The key to using two bright/bold colors is to use one as a dominate and one as an accent. Otherwise, it can look TOO planned out and overwhelming.

I LOVE the two colors you%26#039;ve chosen though ... and the bridesmaids dresses? Gorgeous. Just refine the usage of yellow, and it will be an absolutely picture perfect day.
Reply:Yes it%26#039;s cute, but have the ring bearer wear a black tux with yellow vest/tie/bow. Don%26#039;t overpower with both colors. Use one color as your primary (which seems to be azalea since that%26#039;s the color your BM dresses are) and accent with yellow.
Reply:I think with yellow it gets a bit too bright I would suggest maybe a royal blue if you want to keep it bright or a navy blue. Blue tones will bring out the pink more The yellow will drown it
Reply:Cute on the pink yellow dresses but I wouldn%26#039;t do a yellow bow unless it%26#039;s more of a %26quot;butter%26quot; color. That would look amazing. Bright yellow would overpower the pink and cut them in half. I%26#039;m not too big on the little guy wearing all yellow either. Tuxes can look so overbearing on a little one already the yellow would eat him up. Plus, if he is under 5 or 6 he might not be able to order anything from an adult line. I%26#039;m not even sure where you would find a yellow tuxedo. It would look like a costume on him as well unless the other guys were wearing all yellow too.

Pink and yellow are so cute together but it has to be the right shades so they don%26#039;t fight against each other.
Reply:I don%26#039;t particular like the idea of a ring bearer wearing a yellow tux and I think it is to much for the flower girls. I would have the ring bearer wear a suit with a yellow tie and have the girls in white dress with a pink sash and then you can pin a yellow flower on the sash.
Reply:i think it would look better if the flow girls wore a light periwinkle or a dim color. and the ring bearer should wear the same color as the flower girls just a little darker.
Reply:the flower girl idea is great

for the ring bearer have it in a nice yellow vest,

not a yellow suit

have the groomsmen wear yellow ties

Need suggestions for wedding flowers....?

Hi all! You%26#039;ve helped me before so here I am again. :)

My wedding colors are Azalea and Blue Velvet (bridesmaid dresses are from David%26#039;s Bridal in those colors) and my accent color is silver. I have 4 bridesmaids and we have 4 groomsmen (this does include Matron of Honor and Best Man). My girls are wearing the same dress but two in Azalea and two are in the Blue velvet. The groomsmen will be wearing the matching vest of the girl%26#039;s dress they are walking with. On the top of my dress there is silver lace etching so my fiance will be wearing a silver vest to match me.

We are trying to not go too expensive and I definitely would like fresh flowers.

I am meeting with the florist on Saturday and would just like to go in with some kind of idea of what could be in my budget.

Any ideas for those colors would be greatly appreciated!

Need suggestions for wedding flowers....?
get dipped roses. im having a bunch of colors in mine, but i want a lot of white too. what im doing is getting fresh white roses and having them TIPPED in all my colors. that way you still see all the white, but looking at my boquet, you see color accents on all the roses. im also using some gladyolas, they are so pretty and wedding-y! good luck!
Reply:Your florist is the best person to give you advice. I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ll have color swatches with you, and that will help in making your decision. Your colors sound lovely.

I don%26#039;t know what the shades of blue are. In my daughter%26#039;s wedding, her bridesmaids wore %26quot;navy blue,%26quot; but it was more of a subtle, lovely %26quot;toned down%26quot; royal blue. It wasn%26#039;t the dark, somber color that we all know as %26quot;navy.%26quot;

She, too, was on a budget. Her bridesmaid carried 3 white roses with sprays of blue delphinium and accents of long, slender lariope grass. The boquets were tied with sheer, white ribbon in a pale ivory color to match the roses. They were lovely.

There are many pretty, suitable flowers that will not wreck your budget.

I%26#039;m sure you%26#039;ll have a beautiful wedding!
Reply:Just explain the situation to the florist. They will use larger flowers in the colors you specify to keep costs down.

If you allow them more wiggle room, and don%26#039;t come in with a specific idea, you%26#039;ll get a better price.

Remember, you are paying for their expertise. If you%26#039;re not confident in their abilities, go somewhere else.
Reply:For something different, you could have the bridesmaids carry a bouquet of only fresh baby%26#039;s breath. I think that would be beautiful.

And you could do the same and put some silver and blue accents in there and use a silver or blue ribbon to wrap the bouquet.

Congrats and best wishes for a happy life!
Reply:blue hydrangeas. They look beautiful in pictures. You can mix in some greenery and white stephanoctis (sp?) with maybe some white calla lillies or roses. I think there is also a variety of blue peonies. Blue irises are gorgeous as well. Remember, the flowers can be a complimentary color. They don%26#039;t have to be blue or have blue elements if you don%26#039;t want them to, but here are some beautiful bouquets I found on theknot.com. You can search by color. Check out these pics for some ideas:

Reply:Stick to a flower color scheme of whites, creams, ivorys and champagne colors accented with silver ribbons.
Reply:Ok apparently I%26#039;m the odd ball. I don%26#039;t think with that much blue you should carry blue flowers. I think it should stand out against the dresses.

Canary yellow flowers would pop against those dresses (especially the blue velvet).

Perhaps a blush pink rose arrangement.

I really like the konfetti roses (i think thats how they are spelled). They really pop

With the azalea being so bright a color (love it btw), perhaps do a muted flower like the purples/blues they had above. Or a more blush rose with only the tips pink. I think its a Nicole Floribunda rose or a Gemini tea rose.

Calla lily is a very popular wedding flower and comes in all colors too. I used flame tipped calla lilies in mine. It also had bear grass in the arrangements. I love arrangements with the different grasses.

But they also come in the bold yellow like this

http://www.flickr.com/photos/airchild/44...

Plus for your bouquet you could get some in that exact same bold as the azalea dress

http://www.flickr.com/photos/ahardcastle...

Plus they are normally in white so you can have white as well in your bouquet or for the bouts.

Of course since the dresses are so different in colors, they probably shouldn%26#039;t all carry the same bouquet. It should probably be very different for the blue velvet as the azalea. Those are both so eye popping that if you can, I%26#039;d take a fabric swatch of each dress to the florist so that you can show him the colors. If not, at least take your laptop.

Hope this helps!
Reply:Cala lilies are beautiful!!! You can use one big cala lily wrapped in silver wire accented with Azalea and blue velvet. It looks great. I saw it at a wedding this last winter. You can also put some around your cake.

Click on link below to view some pictures. They are awesome.

You can get it in most colors but I recommend it in ivory.

It is so rich looking.

Does anyone know how much or how often to water azaleas?

Generally speaking: WATERING -Azaleas need a soil that is moist, but not soggy, throughout the year. They are not deep-rooted. Make sure the entire shallow root zone is moistened when watering.Check the soil with your finger to determine how deeply any water has penetrated. Generally a deep soaking once a week is sufficient. Use an irrigation basin around each plant -slow deep soaking or low sprinklers to cover ground beneath the plant. Avoid overhead watering as wet flowers finish much faster. I hope this gives you some idea......

Does anyone know how much or how often to water azaleas?
outside: you must have acid soil. peat moss beds are best.

indoors: call your florist or nurseryman.

i have west texas alkaline soil. azaleas have to be planted in peat moss trenches to live here.in east texas, however, they flouish like magic. you must travel to tyler, texas, when the azaleas, rhododendrons, dogwood trees, and redbud trees are in bloom. you just won%26#039;t believe your eyes. every yard in the entire city displays a fairyland of brilliantly colored gorgeous blooms.--one of the most unforgetable trips of my life!
Reply:I would say at least twice a week depending on how hot or cool it is. And I would water them with watering hose for at least 5 to 10 minutes at a time.
Reply:In the ground once a week, In pots 2-3 x%26#039;s per week depending on the heat and humidity of your area.
Reply:azaleas really need rain water rather than tap water it is much better for them. so the best way to water them is from a rain water butt or standing them outside in the rain. feeding them should be done with a sequeseted iron formular obtained from a garden center. they do prefer as already said peat based acid soil

good luck

Is it true that I shouldn't plant vegetables where azaleas once grew?

Most vegies like a neutral soil - azaleas thrive in an acid soil. So if you want to plant vegies you will have to add soil amendments to sweeten the soil. As for the %26quot;poison%26quot; issue - if in doubt plant fruiting vegetables like tomatos or peppers, and plant leafy vegetables like spinach or lettuce elsewhere.

Is it true that I shouldn%26#039;t plant vegetables where azaleas once grew?
i don%26#039;t know the full answer but i do know that azaleas are acidic plants. They like lots of acid and will thrive under these conditions. I hope it helps a little!

Coffee Grounds?

I read that you can use Azalea fertilizer on Gardenias. I also read that Azalea%26#039;s do well with coffee grounds. Would that hold true to Gardenia%26#039;s then? I live in So. Cal. inland.

Coffee Grounds?
What you%26#039;re looking at is two plants that require an acidic soil. Coffee and, therefore, the grounds are slightly acidic. That%26#039;s why coffee grounds help the soil for Azaleas and Gardenias. They also provide organic matter that the plants can use when they decompose.
Reply:It%26#039;s a good way to get rid of your coffee grounds, that%26#039;s for sure. I%26#039;ve heard that coffee grounds will not work as a fertilizer. Maybe if you use unused coffee grounds, that might work, but then you get your flowers addicted to caffeine, and then you will have to water them with coke.
