Am I too late in pruning back some established azaleas in southeast?

I would not prune them now. As soon as they quit blooming is the correct time. They have already started growth for next years bloom. I%26#039;ve heard they can be pruned up to late June but I would not take the chance. from georgia.

If they are through blooming it is ok to trim them back now.

Reply:I have been growing azaleas for approximately 30 years. Now is a good time to prune. I try to prune once they have bloomed. If you apply fertilizer around the base of the plant it is extremely beneficial to push new growth and blooms. The time to not prune azaleas in you area would be after the beginning of August. Why? As the sun gets lower on the horizon it signals the plant that fall is coming and when it does this the plant begins to set blooms on the new growth. Any pruning until the next spring flowering will remove the maturing blooms. This will not harm the plant and you can prune any time except form the first of November till the middle to end of December. Open cuts can be hurt by cold damage. Aftr december the sap is gone and then you can prune but remember all cuts will remove blooms and effect the essence of growing an azalea.
